Approximately ninety-one species of Pinguicula are currently known. In addition, a few species have been discovered recently and some more are still awaiting description. Butterworts are widely distributed across the continents, but the vast majority are concentrated in the Northern Hemisphere, especially in the tropical regions of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
