Description

Pinguicula cyclosecta

Pinguicula cyclosecta is a beautiful Mexican butterwort known for its compact rosette, colorful foliage, and attractive purple flowers. It is one of the smaller species among the orchid-flowered Pinguicula.

This species produces two different types of growth throughout the year. During its active growing season, it forms a rosette of approximately 6–12 carnivorous leaves, which are covered with sticky glands used to capture small insects. During its winter succulent phase, the plant produces a much tighter rosette consisting of approximately 35–80 smaller, non-carnivorous succulent leaves.

About This Particular Form

This particular Pinguicula cyclosecta has some interesting characteristics that distinguish it from the typical form in our collection. Its flower is slightly smaller with wavier petals and a beautiful metallic-purple coloration, see picture. (Left flower is a typical cyclosecta, right flower is cyclosecta {El Cielo}.

The rosette currently appears greener while still showing a noticeable purple hue. However, we have not grown this form under strong lighting for an extended period yet, so its full color potential is still being evaluated. As we continue growing it under stronger light and different conditions, we'll update this listing with additional information and photos.

As with many Pinguicula, coloration can vary depending on light intensity, temperature, growing conditions, and the time of year, making each plant especially interesting to grow and observe.

It is strongly recommended to get a heating pack during the winter to protect your plant from low temperatures, we are not responsible for dead plants that did not have a heating pack during transit. 1 heating pack per order is enough.
