Utricularia praelonga
Utricularia praelonga is a unique perennial terrestrial bladderwort that stands out from many other Utricularia species because of its unusual foliage. While most terrestrial bladderworts produce small leaves that stay close to the soil, U. praelonga can develop very long, upright, grass-like leaves, along with shorter, more typical strap-shaped leaves.
Like other bladderworts, the carnivorous action happens below the surface. The plant produces tiny underground bladder traps that capture microscopic organisms. These traps help provide the plant with additional nutrients while remaining completely hidden in the growing media.
When mature, U. praelonga produces attractive bright yellow flowers, which may appear in small groups above the foliage.
This species grows well in a sandy peat-based mix that is kept consistently moist. It also tolerates occasional flooding, making it relatively easy to maintain when provided with plenty of clean, low-mineral water.
Utricularia praelonga can be grown successfully in a terrarium, greenhouse, or on a bright windowsill. Protect the plant from freezing temperatures.
