Utricularia involvens

Utricularia involvens is a beautiful medium to large terrestrial bladderwort native to parts of Southeast Asia and northern Australia. 

In its natural habitat, U. involvens grows in wet grasslands, marshes, and seasonal swamps, usually in moist sandy or peaty soils. It is generally found at lower elevations, although populations in Malaysia can grow at elevations of up to approximately 900 meters (2,950 feet).

One of the most interesting features of this species is its extremely long flower stalks (inflorescences). As they grow, the stalks naturally scramble and climb through nearby vegetation for support. When growing this plant in cultivation, we recommend providing a stake, stick, or similar support for the flower stalks to wrap around as they develop.

Like other Utricularia, this plant produces tiny underground bladder traps that capture microscopic organisms in the growing media. The traps are usually hidden from view, while the flowers provide the real show above the soil.

Utricularia involvens is a fascinating addition to any carnivorous plant collection, especially for growers looking for an unusual terrestrial bladderwort with an impressive flowering habit.
