Description

Pinguicula orchidioides {near Ixtlan de Juarez, Oaxaca, México} is a perennial heterophyllous species that produces distinct summer and winter leaves. In the winter, it produces a subterranean bulb winter rosette with many pointed succulent leaves clothed with hair. The summer rosette consists of about 2-8 much larger petiolated carnivorous leaves. Pinguicula orchidioides has the ability to bear whip like stolons from the summer rosette and produce new plants. P. orchidioides identity was lost for a long time when Hooker (1846) was presented with a misidentified P. orchidioides, which resulted in the plant being incorporated as a synonym of P. caudata. However, Luhrs, subsequently, described the plant as P. stolonifera, further adding to the confusion. In 1998, Zamudio resurrected the original name for P. orchidioides.
