Description
Pinguicula 'Alebrije'
Pinguicula 'Alebrije' is a selected hybrid of Pinguicula zamudioana × Pinguicula medusina from the collection of carnivorous plant breeder Rodrigo Patrón.
The name "Alebrije" comes from the famous Mexican folk art sculptures known for their bright colors and imaginative designs. Alebrijes are fantastical creatures that combine features from different animals, creating unique and magical forms.
The story of the Alebrije began in the 1930s with Mexican artist Pedro Linares. During a serious illness, he dreamed of a strange forest filled with extraordinary creatures. He saw animals unlike anything found in nature—a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with bull horns, and a lion with an eagle's head. As they moved through the forest, they all repeated the same mysterious word: "Alebrijes."
After recovering, Linares brought these dream creatures to life through his artwork, creating the colorful sculptures that are now celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world.
Just like its namesake, Pinguicula 'Alebrije' is a unique and fascinating plant that combines traits from two remarkable Mexican species, Pinguicula zamudioana and Pinguicula medusina. Its unusual heritage and striking appearance make it an excellent addition to any carnivorous plant collection.
