Dionaea muscipula care instructions
About Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula)
The Venus Flytrap is one of the most iconic carnivorous plants, known for its snapping traps and easy care when given the right conditions. With plenty of light and pure water, it’s a fun and rewarding plant for beginners. 🌿
Mature Size
Most Venus flytraps grow to about 3–5 inches wide when fully mature, though their size can vary depending on the variety. Some cultivars stay smaller and may not reach this full size, so it’s always a good idea to check the individual plant listing for specific details.
Keep in mind that young plants will start out much smaller and gradually grow to their full size over time with proper care. With good lighting, clean water, and the right conditions, your plant will slowly fill out and produce more traps as it matures.
Lighting
Venus Flytraps need lots of light to stay healthy.
- Best option: Full sun outdoors
- Indoors: use strong grow lights (full-spectrum)
- If temperatures get extremely hot, provide light shade to prevent leaf burn
👉 More light = stronger, more colorful traps
Soil / Media
Use a simple, nutrient-free mix:
- Peat moss + perlite (2:1 ratio), or
- Pure sphagnum moss
🚫 Do not use regular potting soil—it will harm your plant.
Watering
This is one of the most important parts of care.
- Keep the plant sitting in a tray of water at all times
- Always use distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water
- Never let the soil dry out
Humidity
Venus Flytraps do well in 50–80% humidity, but they are very adaptable and usually grow fine in normal conditions.
Temperature
They can handle a wide range of temperatures:
- 30–85°F is ideal
- They tolerate cooler weather better than most carnivorous plants
Feeding
If grown outdoors, your plant will catch its own food.
If grown indoors, feed every 2–3 weeks:
- Small bugs
- Dried bloodworms
- Fish food (no additives or minerals)
👉 Fertilizer is not needed and should only be used by experienced growers.
Dormancy (Very Important)
Venus Flytraps need a winter rest (dormancy) every year.
- During colder months, the plant will slow down and may look smaller or partially die back—this is normal
- If you live in a warm area:
- Keep the plant cool (32–55°F)
- Reduce light to about 10 hours per day
- Water less, but do not let it dry out
🌱 This rest period is essential for long-term health and strong growth.
