Sun Pitcher Plants (Heliamphora) Care
About Heliamphora (Sun Pitchers)
Heliamphora are beautiful carnivorous plants known for their tall, elegant pitchers. They come from cool, misty mountaintops in South America, which means they prefer bright light, high humidity, and cooler temperatures.
Some types can be a bit challenging, but hybrids and species like H. heterodoxa, H. nutans, and H. minor are great choices for beginners. 🌿
Lighting
Heliamphora love bright light.
- A very bright window or strong grow lights work best
- In terrariums, use T5 or LED grow lights (12–16 hours daily)
- More light = better color and stronger growth
If the plant looks very green, it likely needs more light.
Temperature
These plants prefer cooler conditions:
- Day: 60–80°F
- Night: 45–60°F
They do best with cool nights, so avoid letting them stay too warm all the time.
Try to keep them away from hot, stagnant air.
Watering
Always use distilled, rain, or RO water only.
- Keep the soil moist at all times (never fully dry)
- You can use the tray method with a small amount of water
- Avoid letting the plant sit in deep water for long periods
On hot days, using cool water can help keep the roots comfortable.
Soil / Media
Use a light, airy mix that drains well:
- Long-fiber sphagnum moss + perlite, pumice, or lava rock
This helps keep the roots cool and healthy.
Humidity
Heliamphora like high humidity.
- Aim for 60% or higher
- A terrarium, humidity dome, or enclosed space can help
- Make sure there is still some airflow
Feeding / Fertilization
These plants don’t need much feeding, but you can help them grow faster:
- Feed small insects occasionally, or
- Use diluted Maxsea fertilizer once a month (in the pitchers) and only if you are familiar with Maxsea.
Do not pour fertilizer into the soil.
Potting Tips
- Use plastic or ceramic pots
- Larger pots help keep roots cool and stable
- Avoid repotting too often
Dormancy
Heliamphora do not go dormant and will grow year-round with proper care.
