Bladderworts (Utricularia) Care
Utricularia (Bladderworts)
Utricularia are fascinating carnivorous plants perfect for indoor growing, valued for their lush, moss-like growth and delicate, orchid-like flowers that can bloom repeatedly under the right conditions. These easy-growing species are excellent for both beginners and collectors alike. 🌸
Lighting
Provide bright indirect light for optimal growth and flowering.
- A south-facing window with a few hours of gentle direct sun works very well
- If natural light is limited, use LED or fluorescent grow lights
- Consistent lighting helps promote compact growth and frequent blooms
Watering
Utricularia thrive in consistently wet conditions.
- Use only mineral-free water (distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater under 50 ppm)
- Keep the pot sitting in a shallow tray of water at all times
- The growing medium should remain evenly moist and never dry out
Soil / Media
Use a light, moisture-retentive mix that allows for airflow:
- Long-fiber sphagnum moss, or
- A mix of peat moss and perlite
Avoid any soil containing fertilizers, minerals, or additives, as these can harm or kill the plant.
Temperature
Utricularia grow well in a wide temperature range:
- 55–85°F is ideal
- Tolerates cooler conditions, but always protect from frost
Fertilizer / Feeding
Most terrestrial Utricularia naturally capture microscopic prey in the soil and do not require feeding.
- Species such as U. longifolia, U. alpina, and U. reniformis thrive without fertilization
- Smaller species like U. sandersonii, U. bisquamata, U. livida, U. fulva, and U. dichotoma are also self-sufficient
For enhanced growth or flowering, you may optionally apply Maxsea fertilizer (follow label directions carefully).
